She smiled as she watched the two exchanged glances. She has known Vars for many years and she's curious about the person in his life, as much as the one in her son's. Part of that is that Viktor will be in Aarne's life as well in the future.
"Why do you refrain from swearing?" Aarne's mother is genuinely curious. The fire comment has her raising a brow at Vars.
The Norwegian smirks and glances at Viktor. "Hän on katupunk kuten minä."
Viktor glanced at Vars and then back at Aarne's mother when she asked about his swearing. Oh fuck---what was he supposed to say?
"It's disrespectful in front of someone else's parents. Swearing and stuff."
Usually, Viktor would never refrain from swearing or doing anything so this was something new for him. He was doing it because Joe was the whole reason they were there and the punk didn't want to ruin it for him. Viktor had no idea what Vars just said but Aarne's mother seemed to be ok with it.
Násti was critical but not harshly so. It was rather sweet that these British men were trying to honor their culture and people. It won her over far more than anything Viktor might say.
"You are acquainted with my child. Do you think I find swearing offensive?" It was an honest question and one that she was using to probe at how well Viktor might know Aarne. Vars though was staring toward the kitchen and worrying for Joe. He knew the other bassist was so stressed over this whole process. He wished he could go check on Joe but that was outside of etiquette.
"I suppose it's how I was brought up. My mum used to hit me over the head if I swore in front of her or my old man. Just something British I suppose."
Viktor shrugged and knew he often got yelled at by his parents for his "delinquent" behaviour. They were going to send him to some sort of correctional place for bad behaved kids. Fuck that. The punk looked behind and wondered how Joe was.
She smiled at the Brit and nodded. "We have customs to refrain in some places but not in the home."
Viktor, and by extension Joe, had a lot less work to do in order to win over Násti since she trusted Vars. If this man was good enough for Vars and Joe was his friend then there was a cultural sort of acceptance already.
"Yes, he is loud and has been since he was born." Slowly Násti was opening up and relaxing.
Joe decided to come back into the room because he'd been busy pacing around in the kitchen near pulling his hair out. Fuck, this was stressful! He needed a drink so bad right now but knew he couldn't. This was about Aarne's mother and acceptance into the family so had to put everything on the line and behave.
"Can I come back in?"
Viktor turned to see Joe and he looked so nervous it was weird seeing the usually crazy bassist so stressed.
Vars looked up to and glanced at the other two at the table. Joe looked like an overly tightened guitar string ready to break.
"Bring coffee." Vars encouraged the other bassist. It got a smile from Aarne's mom and nod. They could all share coffee then and she could talk to Joe.
Joe remembered he had to bring coffee! Oh shit---had he forgotten already? The bassist frowned then went back into the kitchen to bring the coffee. He was so stressed he forgot about what should happen.
"Here it is."
The bassist brought the coffee and tried not to fuck anything else up because right now Joe was out of his depth and comfort zone. Viktor could see how wound up the bassist was as he gave Joe a slap on the back for comfort.
Vars smiled at the Brit when he returned with coffee. He could imagine that this whole situation was stressful for Joe but he was probably ok. Vars couldn't see Aarne's family not accepting another wild, black haired boy into their family.
"Kiitos rakkaani." Násti spoke and watched Joe's response. Vars knew that Joe probably knew these Finnish words, and probably you're welcome. Those were early words that people learned when it came to new languages. He was hopeful for the other bassist.
Joe knew a little Finnish, not much, but enough to understand that Aarne's mother just said you're welcome. The bassist was still on edge as he looked to Vars and then whispered close to the Norwegian's ear.
"Am I doing ok? Fuck, babe---I thought I ruined it."
Viktor could tell Joe was still stressing judging by the way the bassist was playing with the ends of his crazy hair. Was he accepted? Did this mean he could propose to Aarne? Fuck, he had to know!
Vars gave Joe an encouraging pat on the shoulder as he joined the rest of them at the table. His eyes were on Násti though as she tried the coffee. It was a formality and a sign of respect more than anything about the taste.
The woman at the table could see that Joe was stressed and even though it was unnecessary she could understand why he would be. Setting the coffee cup down she smiled briefly. "Why don't you tell me about yourself, and your relationship with my son, before we get to that question?"
The pat was welcome but Joe still had nerves and was trying to keep calm and not feel the urge to run. No, he couldn't. Aarne wouldn't want that and he had to build up trust with Aarne's family to be able to marry him. He would have to endure.
"I'm a crazy bastard bassist and love to cause fire and chaos on stage with my bass. Aarne is like a twin that never gets pulled away from me and we scream and have fun together."
Joe was going to be truthful with Aarne's mother and not hold back because she had to know what she was getting with the crazy Brit.
"I love him so fucking much it hurts and now can't live without him."
She was attentive now, and more or less ignoring the other two, though it wasn't out of a lack of politeness. Joe was who mattered and the others were more to gauge the kind of people the person chose to trust and surround themselves with. That was an important factor for a marriage but not as important as the partner.
"He is certainly loud." Násti broke into a smile because her oldest child had been loud since the day he was born.
"Does it hurt now, to be here without him?" It's a curious question.
Joe loved that Aarne was as loud, or even louder, than himself because most weren't so crazy and couldn't stand such behaviour. The Finn was perfect and the Brit let out a small giggle thinking about being with Aarne at this precise moment.
"I love him being loud---even louder than me. We scream together naked running around drunk and enjoying life. Not having Aarne here right now? Yeah it does."
The bassist frowned and had never been parted from Aarne this long since they had first met each other back at the Ziggy open bar party.
"Naked?" She asked but the smile was almost amused. There had been some incidents with Aarne as a teen where in appropriateness was a big part of it. Of course he would find someone like himself.
"How long have you been with Aarne?" That was another curiosity though it wouldn't effect her decision.
"Yeah, we run free naked without any bounds or shit like that. Just being natural and having the time of our lives."
This was the truth and the best way Joe could describe it really. It wasn't trashy just good natured nudity with drunkenness added into the mix. They were rock stars so this sort of behaviour wasn't exactly unusual.
"Around two years now. I fell in love with Aarne instantly when I first met him back at a rooftop hotel on the Ziggy tour in New York."
Násti giggled under her breath. This sounded exactly like something Aarne would tell her about nudity. They were quite alike it seemed.
"Tell me about meeting him. What was it like?" This meeting was all about getting to know Joe and how he viewed Aarne. The latter part more important to his mother than the former.
The questions about Aarne were important and Joe knew answering truthfully was the way to go so that Aarne's mother would understand. He still felt a bit on edge but talking about Aarne was helping the Brit calm down.
"When I met him it was like huge fucking fireworks going off and craziness all at once. We got drunk, high and well we bonded with each other behind the bar top."
Viktor holding in a snort at the word "bonded" instead of fucked. Joe was trying to be polite in his own way so talking about fucking Aarne in front of his mother wasn't the politest thing.
Viktor felt the wrap of Vars' cane against his leg which caused a frown but knew what the bassist meant. Everyone was so drunk at that bar and in the mood for fucking including Viktor who chose to be with Vars inside the limo.
"It was a sort of instinct thing---it's hard to explain. He is so like me we work so well together and enjoy being with each other. His energy maybe? The whole awesome thing that's Aarne."
Vars wasn't too serious with the hit and smirked when he saw Viktor frown at him. It was funny.
She likes these answers even if Joe isn't being too specific. "You mentioned you wanted to propose, when were you thinking of doing this, and how?" Now the questions were getting more serious.
Oh fuck. The questions were getting more serious now as Joe glanced to Vars then to Viktor. He had to get this right and was fucking determined right now not to fuck it all up.
"Yeah, I want to propose to him. Soon, when I get back to LA and see Aarne. How? Uh---well, I was thinking something romantic for us together but something Aarne likes for his sprits and things. I want to share in his beliefs and do it the proper way."
Things were definitely getting serious and mentions of their religion had Násti raising her brow at the Brit.
"Do you know which spirits to honor?" She asked this but more to ensure that the young Brit didn't stumble. She didn't expect him to know all the ins-and-outs in two years though he might have some ideas.
Joe tried not to stumble or fuck up so breathed in a then out before trying to think clearly. If only Aarne were here! It would be much easier but then---this was about proving to his family that he was good enough to be a husband.
"The reindeer are important and the aurora spirits. We scream a lot to please them and to ward away the evil ones."
Fuck. Was that enough? Would Aarne's mother understand that the Brit was trying?
She let out a breath and nodded. "There is much more about our families and getting married."
It was a start though and she was pleased the Brit was putting in an effort to learn their language and traditions. "I imagine you will need someone to teach you what to do?"
